Business owners clean Strijdom Park

STRIJDOM PARK – Several business owners and employees in Strijdom Park clean the section of CR Swart Drive and Fabriek Street.

Illegal taxi ranks, informal traders and trolley pushers are some of the factors that contribute to excessive litter on the corner of CR Swart Road and Fabriek Street.

Managing director of Rocktech Earthmoving, Karolynn van Vuren believes that if these informal businesses are formalised the area would be better than its current state of squalor.

On 18 July, several business owners arranged a clean-up in an effort to keep the business area clean and more attractive. Various business owners and employees collected litters and trimmed the overgrown trees to make the area visible for drivers.

Joburg Road Agency Region B office repainted the signs on CR Swart Drive and was expected to repaint street names.

Juliet Nama of JRA said only a few issues such as potholes still needed to be completed and they were in the process of addressing those problems.

“We understand and sympathise with informal traders and their need to earn a living but these businesses should be formalised,” said Van Vuren.

She further explained that some business owners did not want to participate in clean-ups as they believe that the problem persists after the clean-ups.

“This area was littered with sign boards and overgrown grass. There was an infestation of rats, hopefully, now it will be better,” she said.
