Blanket drive teaches many to knit for the needy

NORTH RIDING – Pupils open up their hearts and knit for the less fortunate. North Riding High School's outreach programme donates scarves and crochet blocks for blankets to hand to the Randburg SAPS Victim Support Unit.

As winter continues to be felt, the outreach programme at Northriding High School is taking matters into their hands literally by knitting and crocheting scarves and blocks to be stitched into blankets. The blocks were handed over to Donna Sipman  to turn into blankets that will be handed over to the Randburg Victim Support Unit which assists victims of trauma. They handed over the scarves and squares on 19 July at the school in North Riding.

The pupils crocheted over 30 scarves and two full boxes of squares.

Christina Ruela, a teacher at the school, said that the pupils held a fundraiser to raise money to buy the wool they would need to knit and crochet.

“The pupils held a cake sale and managed to raise around R1 600 and then the crocheting began,” she said.

Ruela pointed out that three teachers taught the pupils how to crochet and it took about two days for the pupils to pick up the new skill.

“We also received donations of wool from other pupils as well as parents. The pupils wanted to do something for the community and they saw this project as feasible for them to venture into and in total it took the pupils eight weeks to complete,” she added.

Sergeant Dipuo Maphanga from the Randburg Police Station said that the scarves would go to old age homes and that the squares would be turned into baby blankets for children in need.

“What the pupils from Northriding High School have done is wonderful and they have now learned a lifelong skill,” Maphanga said.

She added that it was commendable that the pupils from the outreach programme were able to think about those that were in need and encouraged them to continue with their positive deeds.
