Raw sewage causes a stink

OLIVEDALE – Sewage flows down the streets for two weeks.

Raw sewage has been flowing down Christo Avenue and Church Street in Olivedale and residents allege that it has been running for two weeks.

Gwyn Radleff-Rasmussen, a resident of the area, said she has tried on several occasions to contact Johannesburg Water (JW) but could only get through to the City of Joburg. “I tried calling JW using the numbers from their website and could not get through. I then tweeted and sent JW a Facebook message,”she said.

Radleff-Rasmussen who has been a resident of the area for over 34 years pointed out that the raw sewage spilling onto the street had a terrible stench.

“This is a health hazard as people can get sick,” she added.

“This drain issue is not just happening here. In some areas, the raw sewage flows into the Klein Jukskei which eventually goes into the Hartebeespoort Dam, which is the water we drink,” she said.

She lamented that the service JW provided was inadequate and residents were not at all happy about it.

Spokesperson for the water utility, Tidimalo Chuene, said that they were still investigating the matter.
