Shoot-out between police and suspects leads to accident

LANSERIA – Truck collides with six other vehicles after its brakes failed when traffic came to a standstill, due to the earlier shooting incident.

Three fleeing suspects were injured yesterday after a shootout with the police on the N14 at the Petroport between the R511 and the R512, in Nooitgedacht near Lanseria.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela indicated that police were on the lookout for a stolen vehicle. “The suspects were spotted at the petrol garage. When police approach them, they opened fire and a shoot-out ensued – while they attempted to flee,” he said.

He explained that all three suspects were injured during the shootout and the vehicle which they were travelling in was hijacked from Mpumalanga.

“All three suspects are at the hospital under the police guard and a case of possession of stolen vehicle and unlicensed firearms were opened,” he said.

Emer-g-Med spokesperson Max Cohen said they arrived on the scene to find a heavy police presence with a helicopter circling overhead – searching for the hijackers.

“The stolen bakkie was found in a veld a distance away from the highway, after having gone off-road in an attempt to flee,” he said.

He said one suspect was shot in the chest and was in critical condition, requiring rapid Advanced Life Support intervention.

“The second hijacker was shot in the leg, and the third sustained a bullet graze which didn’t require hospital care. The two suspects were treated on the scene, before being transported to hospital under police guard,” he said.

He added that a serious collision occurred on the N14 direction R511 after Malibongwe, in Nooitgedacht.

“It’s believed that a truck’s brakes failed, failing to stop in time when traffic came to a standstill, due to the earlier shooting incident,” he explained.

He indicated that the truck collided with six other vehicles, leaving three people with minor to moderate injuries.
