UPDATE: SABC protest reaches Constitution Hill

JOBURG – The crowd protesting against the SABC is preparing to be addressed at Constitution Hill.

Media, workers and the community have stopped traffic as they march to Constitution Hill in their protest against censorship.

Journalists, editors, community figures, some SABC  employees, members of the Right to Know Campaign and legal representatives marched in silent solidarity. Members of the crowd wore tape across their mouths as a sign of protest.

The crowd marched down Kingsway Avenue and continued into Enoch Sontonga Avenue. The planned route took the crowd straight onto Jorrissen Street to Constitution Hill. The group had been asked to sign a petition against the SABC’s censorship and 6 000 signatures will be handed over to the Chief Justice.

At Constitution Hill, the following organisations and individuals will be given the opportunity to address the Chief Justice and the crowds:

There are reports of confirmation that two journalists’ hearings have been suspended.
