Aries leak ‘finally’ fixed

SUNDOWNER – After months of following up, a local resident saw the fruit of his attempts when a leaking water pipe in Aries Road was finally fixed.

After months of logging complaints, the Aries Road water leak has been fixed and the manhole repaired.

David Strachan, an active Sundowner resident of 20 years, has, for the umpteenth time, fought for the well-being of the natural surroundings along Aries Road. This time, David persistently followed up on a water leak  in Aries Road that started in April due to a burst pipe.

He said the water flowed down the new manhole that had been installed by Telkom.

“I logged the problem four times and every time the case was closed. Eventually, I reached a manager and about a week later in May, a bulldozer arrived.”

David said the attempt to fix the leak saw the bulldozer ripping out the Telkom manhole structure. And the pipe still leaked. On 21 June, David was finally greeted with good news.

“They have now fixed the leak properly,” he said. At the site, Telkom contract workers also repaired the damaged manhole.

Jacqui O’Sullivan, Group Executive Communication’s officer for Telkom, confirmed that a contractor for Openserve, Telkom’s network and wholesale business, made the repairs.

O’Sullivan said it is not clear who is responsible for the damages, but Openserve will attempt to recover the costs from them.

“Openserve repaired the damage and all costs, associated with that repair work, will be recovered by the contractor. It is disappointing that the damage happened in the first place but I am pleased the matter has been resolved” she said.

Comment from Joburg Water is still awaited.

David said this was not the first leak in Sundowner he has come by in recent years, but believes that if you keep holding those responsible accountable, you will eventually see results.
