UPDATE: Residents begin long wait for claims

WINDSOR EAST – Residents of the Rinanda complex have just under a month to wait for their claims to be processed.

Johannesburg Water has released a statement regarding the damage claims the residents of the Rinanda complex can file after a burst pipe on Republic Road destroyed their property.

JW external communications officer Eleanor Mavimbela said, “JW will not be replacing the entire pipeline but rather a section of the pipe. JW has been in contact with the residents with regards to the process that they need to follow to make claims and contact details have been offered to them.”

A relocated resident, who wished to stay anonymous, said she had received contact details to make claims from the ward councilor, Laurette van Zijl, and has not been contacted by JW. The resident sent a list of items she wished to claim to the provided details and was given a claim form to complete. She was given an insurance number and told the claim would take a month to be processed and she should not worry about contacting JW again until 15 July.

In the meantime, the former resident of Rinanda is without a fridge, washing machine and TV. “I am not okay. I can’t buy one piece of meat every day for a meal. It is inconvenient to do a load of washing by hand and I have no TV and a 10-year-old daughter. What am I supposed to do,” the resident explained.

The resident’s neighbour also has not received any correspondence from JW and does not know how to claim.

Johannesburg Water (JW) is still investigating how much water was lost during the main pipe burst on Republic Road.

Details: Johannesburg Water, 011 688 1400.
