SABC Science Road Show in Cosmo City

COSMO CITY – Numerous science initiatives at the Meridian Cosmo City Private Schools encourage pupils to enjoy the subject.

Laquesha Naidoo from Curro Meridian Cosmo City private schools wants to be a forensic scientist and she is passionate about physical sciences.

This Grade 7 pupil believes that her love for science will help her bring justice to victims of crime.

“I believe that one day I can scientifically solve those crime puzzles and change the world for better,” she said.

Naidoo is one of many pupils who is  interested in science at the school and enjoys exploring the dimensions of the subject.

Prince Ndlazi, a Grade 10 pupil, does not find it easy but he puts more effort into his studies in order to enjoy the lessons. “Obviously, I want to excel in this subject and I push a bit harder to know and experiment,” he said.

The school encourages and influences their pupils to choose the subject through the science initiative and the various opportunities they give to pupils.

On 23 June pupils participated in the Science and Technology roadshow filmed at the school for the SABC 1 educational youth programme entitled TOMz (Teenagers on a Mission).

For at least two hours in the morning, pupils gathered at the school main hall with the SABC crew filming the show.

The shows presenter, Caddy Tsotetsi, said the show is meant to teach pupils about science and technology. “We are here to introduce the show to young pupils. We need to bring them to the show,” he said.

He further explained that the science needs more focus and it was how you educate children that made it more interesting. “We bring entertainment to children to make the subject more interesting,” he explained.

The principal, Kathryn Garden, reckoned that the science initiatives at school encouraged more pupils to develop a keen interest in the subject from the early age.

“We have had several science projects since the inception of the school last year. Fifty children participated in the internal science expo last year and this year we have tripled the number,” she explained.

About 60 per cent of Grade 11 pupils do physical science as their major subject at the school.
