How to help the Police find a missing person

HONEYDEW – The arrest of Marthinus Pelser is an example of what happens when the community and the Police collaborate.

Marthinus Pelser went missing on 11 June after he was wanted by the Honeydew Police in connection with the death of baby Deon. Baby Deon was found dead in his cot with burn wounds and a fractured skull.

Pelser was arrested at a Sasol garage on Christian de Wet Road on 15 June, after being spotted by a witness. Criminals or missing persons are often located with the assistance of members of the community, who then alert the police.

Honeydew Police Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said that people who spot a missing person or someone who is wanted by the police should call 10 111 or their nearest police station. They can also call the number that is provided on the missing person’s report.

“A missing person is someone who disappeared for one reason or another who is reported missing by a family member or friend. On the other hand, a wanted person is a person that is wanted by the police for questioning regarding a crime that was committed,” said Jacobs.

There are instances where it is brought to our attention that a loved one or someone we know has committed a crime. In situations like these, it is important not to withhold valuable information from the Police.

“You should immediately report your suspicions to their local police station or Crime Line on 32211. You can give information anonymously and the suspect will not know who gave information about his or her whereabouts. It is difficult to report or hand over a loved one but it is for the best. Suspects can get into more trouble when they are on the run, which could have been avoided,” explained Jacobs.

Jacobs offers the following tips when you are the first person at a scene of a crime:

• The first person on the scene of the crime should assess the situation as quickly as possible

• Call all the necessary emergency personnel. If medical attention is needed they should call the paramedics

• They should ensure that nothing at the crime scene is touched or tampered with

• Keep all curious bystanders away from the scene until emergency services arrive

• On arrival of the police give them all the relevant information and hand the crime scene to them.

She added that it is a serious offence not to report the whereabouts of a wanted person or to assist a missing person who is wanted by the police. Charges can be brought against persons hiding a suspect.

“The police want to thank the community and media who assisted with information that led to the arrest of Pelser,” concluded Jacobs.
