Local hero inspires pupils

NORTH RIDING – Local hero Obakeng Seutane visits school to inspire others to be heroes.

Local hero, Obakeng Seutane, paid a visit to Cooper College with Nicole Morgan to inspire everyone to be a hero.

Seutane was praised for rescuing Morgan after she suffered an anaphylactic shock after being stung by a bee while shopping at Cedar Square Mall in Fourways with her six-year-old son. Seutane’s swift actions saw him put Morgan in his car and drive her to the nearest hospital where doctors were able to stabilise her with adrenaline and various antihistamines.

Principal of Cooper College in North Riding, Hesna Muller, said that they felt that this story of an ‘everyday hero’ was an amazing life lesson and inspiration to their pupils and invited Seutane and Morgan to speak at the school’s assembly on 30 May. “The initiative was also part of Cooper College’s ongoing anti-bullying campaign, providing the pupils with anecdotal evidence of true-life heroes and relevant role models,” Muller said.

Pupils at Cooper College listen as Obakeng Seutane tells his story.

She pointed out that if Seutane had not acted quickly and not been prepared to take the risk upon himself of transporting Morgan to the hospital, she would not be alive today. “Seutane calls himself an ‘average college guy’ who was in the right place at the right time. A truly humble hero,” Muller added.

Seutane told the pupils, “You may think it’s nothing when you are trying to help someone, but a small act of kindness can mean the world to someone else.”

Muller explained that in this case, Seutane’s decision to help Morgan saved someone’s ‘mommy’ and someone’s wife. Seutane’s message to the pupils was that you don’t have to be a cape-wearing superhero to save lives.

Muller further explained that the pupils were given the opportunity to ask questions and that one pupil came up to meet the local hero and asked him how he felt when he realised that he had saved a life. To which Seutane responded that it felt like he had a rainbow in his tummy.
