WATCH: Over 432 000 litres wasted in 10 days
RANDPARK RIDGE –Over 432 000 litres of fresh water has been wasted with no explanation.
A broken water pipe on Seder Street in Randpark Ridge has been leaking clean water from 25 May.
Residents and Ward 98 Councillor Laurette van Zijl reported the broken pipe to Johannesburg Water (JW) and Region C Depot several times. Glen Lester, a Randpark Ridge resident, said, “It is absurd that despite reporting the issue to the relevant entities, that the pipe still remains unfixed after 10 days.”

Randpark Ridge Village Association chairperson, Phil Culham, commented that the sheer lack of service from JW is highly disturbing.
The Randburg Sun conducted a rudimentary experiment to determine how many litres of water have been wasted in the 10-day period. This was done by using a five litre bucket.
The 5 litre bucket was filled in an estimated 10 seconds. This works out to 30 litres in one minute and 1800 litres per hour and 43 200 litres per day. An estimated total of 432 000 litres of fresh water has been wasted between 25 May until 3 June.
Joburg Water spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela stated on 2 June, “The burst pipe has been attended to. There is a telecom sleeve with water in it and the depot is busy today with leak detection.”
She further commented that after the source of the water is identified, the depot will repair it as soon as possible.
Councillor Van Zijl said, “It is totally unacceptable that burst pipes take so long to be fixed. I know I escalated the problem numerous times, so there is no excuse for not fixing the pipe timeously.”
Up-to-date comment has not yet been received from Joburg Water.
