HUSSEIN SHEIK: Our government expenditure is wasteful. It would rather benefit people to get housing, alleviate poverty and provide basic necessities people need.
Police Minister Nathi Nhleko revealed in a recent parliamentary reply that the South African Police Services (SAPS), spent R8.6 million buying luxury cars for President Jacob Zuma’s four wives.
The presidency said in a statement that they would engage the SAPS to discuss benefit policies with regards to the recent announcement of the allocation of vehicles for the spouses of the President.
Opposition parties such as the African National Congress and the Economic Freedom Fighters publicly criticised President Zuma’s government expenditure. They believe the President ordering a review of car expenditure for his wives, is a political ploy ahead of local elections.
Residents expressed their concerns and opinion about the president’s expenditure on his wives. This is what they had to say:
BRANDY MOKGADITSE: I believe the government’s expenditure is ridiculous. I do not think it is okay to use tax payers money to support his family. He should use his salary to take care of his family.
BOB FERET: I believe it is time for change and the ANC are not using their brains with the power they have. I question why money is not being spent on schools and hospitals. What kind of a life will the younger generation live?
SHELTON NDLOVU: I am a voter and I am happy with the leadership of the country but I do not agree with how the President is spending money. That money can rather be used to help people.
LEANNE GILBERSON: I think it is unacceptable how he spends money. I am not a Zuma fan and believe not enough is being done about his abuse of power.
NADINE JANSEN: I think it is insane that Zuma is spending money like that when our country is in so much need. I believe him stepping down is the best solution.
NOEL HONEY: My wife works in areas such as Zandspruit, where I believe that it is unfair that they cannot get electricity but millions are spent on luxury cars. People have to be incentivised in different industries and people from the bottom of the economic ladder need to be taken care of.
