RMS and Pikitup team up to keep CBD clean

RANDBURG CBD – RMS corporate solutions and Pikitup strive to keep the CBD clean.

RMS Corporate Solutions which manages Randburg Management District (RMD), which is a legislated City Improvement District (CID), and Pikitup appealed to business owners and residents to help them keep the Randburg CBD clean and free from litter.

Over the past few months, it was recognised that shop owners and customers were dumping litter along the streets. Some of the shop owners leave their refuse bags on the street corners, after Pikitup employees have already passed.

This, however, has contributed massively to the litter in the CBD and it is a challenge to the cleaners as they strive to keep the area clean.

Lawrence Young from RMS explained that they teamed up with the City’s entity when their employees were reduced by half due to financial constraints.

“We did not have the capacity to keep the shopping area clean. Pikitup got more involved and now we work together as a team and we communicate on a regular basis,” he said.

He further indicated that business owners should be aware of the challenge and contribute to the greater deed of the CBD.

“These shop owners should instruct their employees to refrain from littering and using small shopping bags as refuse bags,” he explained.

Pikitup Randburg Depot operations manager, Sello Majela, said they received numerous complaints from residents about litter in the CBD.

The entity then teamed up with the centre management and would intensify litter picking efforts as of today 1 June.

Litter pickers were expected to move around the streets in the CBD throughout the day during the week from 7am until 1.30pm. On weekends, they will collect litter from 7am until 10am.

“We are appealing to shop owners to dump litter in a Pikitup refuse bag and the shoppers to use the pedestrian bins,” he said.

“We have these bins 500 metres apart at bus stops and four-way stops,” he continued.

He said they would extend their services to Bram Fischer Drive towards Republic Road, Bordeaux Street and Jan Smuts Avenue to keep Randburg clean.
