UPDATE: Sonneglans murder: details unfold

SONNEGLANS - Multiple gunshots fired in Sonneglans. Woman murdered. Suspect dies upon arrival in hospital.

A women was killed and her husband sustained serious injuries on 26 May at about 3pm at their home in Witdoring Road, Sonneglans.

The suspect was also shot and succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at hospital.

According to various reports it is believed that the husband went to pick up a casual worker on the street corner to help out around the house. A neighbour who wished to remain anonymous also said that it was believed that the suspect was a casual worker.

Honeydew Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer, Karen Jacobs, however, could not confirm this. She emphasised that this information is only speculation at this point, as the husband is still in hospital and an affidavit could only be completed later on.

“The case is at a very sensitive point,” said WO Jacobs. She added that a case of murder and attempted murder has been opened.

The neighbour explained that she arrived at her home shortly after 3pm and heard eight to nine gunshots being fired while she was opening her gate. She pressed her panic button and was impressed with the Community Support Services who arrived only a minute later. She accompanied the CSS security guard inside her neighbour’s home, where she found the woman, still alive.

But by the time paramedics arrived on the scene, the woman had succumbed to her multiple fatal injuries. According to a statement released by ER24, paramedics arrived on the scene found the body of the woman lying motionless on the property. “Nothing more could be done and she was declared dead on the scene,” said Russel Meiring, spokesperson for ER24.

WO Jacobs could not yet confirm if the suspect had attempted to rob the couple.
