Residents from the Randburg Police Precinct are encouraged to attend the Tekkie Tax Day ceremony this Friday.

The men and women in blue will dress in jeans and tekkies at a contribution of R10 to be donated to a local school for disabled children.

The police will walk from the station in Kensington B to Randburg CBD where they will distribute pamphlets about children’s safety.

The event organiser, Sergeant Cookie Maphanga, from social crime prevention unit, said it was initially a female’s police initiative but now it is attended by all the members.

“We are appealing to the community members to join us as we will also be commemorating child protection week,” she said.

The event is scheduled to start from 9am until 12pm. The police have also called business people who would like to contribute to attend the event.

“We will also educate the public about children’s rights,” she said. Maphanga further explained that they have been educating children about their rights and responsibilities for over the years. “We do go to schools and teach children to know and understand their rights,” she explained.

The station spokesperson, Constable Stanley Bopape, added that companies who wanted to contribute to the success of the event could call the organiser. “We are inviting everyone in the community to be part of this event,” he concluded.
