100 comfort packs for Child Protection week

STRUBEN VALLEY – Comfort packs made for girls brought into the child protection units.

Matla-a-Bana, Honeydew SAPS and Honeydew CPF, Keller Williams Realty and Laerskool Kenmare took part in a joint project for Child protection week.

The project began with the concept of creating ‘comfort packs’ for abused children. The group collected comfort packs at Clearwater Mall for victims of crime. This is in support of the upcoming Child Protection Week.

About 100 comfort packs were packed for girls aged between 5 and 8, and handed over to the Honeydew Cluster FCS unit and Honeydew CPF Trauma unit. The comfort packs were handed over to victims of crime, especially rape victims.

Inside each pack was a toothbrush, toothpaste, underwear, soap, face cloth, colouring-in book and crayons, a teddybear and some snacks.

Honeydew SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said, “It is great to work with the community and help give some happiness to children or victims of rape.”

Founder of Matla-a-bana charity, Monique Strydom said, “We have collected these comfort packs to make a difference in a child’s life.”

Strydom explained how the process of reporting a rape can be a lengthy process and the comfort packs helps to keep the child’s mind busy. “The small teddy bear or colouring-in book brings comfort in a time where comfort is hard to come by,” added Strydom.
