ROBIN HILLS – The Grade 11 hospitality pupils at The King's School Robin Hills hosted an International Evening and treated guest to an evening of delicious food.

The Grade 11 hospitality pupils at The King’s School Robin Hills hosted an International Evening where they treated guests to an array of dishes from different countries.

Guests were treated to a four-course dinner cooked and served by the pupils who hustled and bustled in the kitchen to get their dishes out on time. One of the chefs for the day, Luke Jones, prepared chicken with tahini (ground sesame seeds) and honey and was assisted by Princess Sigidi. “I really enjoy cooking, which is why took this class and I enjoy this class because I learn really interesting things about hospitality,” Jones said.

Another chef, Kieran Beukes, who prepared city ceviche as his starter. Beukes said that he took the class because his mother and grandmother had always encouraged him to cook from an early age. “As soon as I was able to hold a spoon my mom and gran had me in the kitchen learning how to cook and I enjoy this because this is training me to be the perfect husband one day,” he said.

The hospitality teacher Petra Burger explained that the pupils had planned the evening since the beginning of the year and that the evening was an all-boy night where the boys from the class had to prepare the food.

“The school has been offering hospitality since 1998 and we started off with a little stove and a fridge and moving forward, 18 years on, we have a fully kitted kitchen and which we call the King’s Cafe to host such evenings,” Burger said.

She pointed out that the subject taught the pupils to serve and enable them to push themselves despite sore backs and tired feet.

She boasted that they have had pupils who have gone on to be top chefs around the country and added that one of their pupils is currently working in Dubai as a chef.
