Last day to register for Municipal elections

JHB - Voter registration closes today at 5pm.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed that today is the last day to register, re-register (in a new voting district) or update registration details, ahead of the 2016 Municipal elections on 3 August.

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs David van Rooyen indicated his intention yesterday to proclaim the 2016 Municipal elections on

23 May. Once the election is proclaimed the voters’ roll is closed no changes to the voters’ roll, including additional registrations or re-registrations, can be accepted.

The IEC explained that you can make an appointment to apply for registration during office hours at the local IEC office responsible for your voting district. Please always phone first to make an appointment.

You would need a green, bar-coded ID book, smartcard ID or valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC). To find out where you are registered you can send an SMS with your ID number to 32810. SMS’s are charged at R1 per sms. People can phone the IEC to find their local office.
