VIDEO AND GALLERY: School puts on an amazing show

RANDPARK RIDGE – Rand Park High pupils entertain parents and children with a school play titled Shine.

Rand Park High School pupils showed their magnificent talent on stage when they performed their school play titled Shine based on Fame: the Musical.

Parents and children flocked to the school hall on the evening of 12 May to witness the production by the school pupils.

Three of the songs from the play that were performed by the musicians and performers were originals – composed by members of the cast and the band.

Deputy principal and dean of culture, Tracy Workman-Davies, said the play offered pupils an opportunity to display their talent. She said they rehearsed for this major school production performance for the past three months.

“The most amazing aspect of this play is that it incorporates various genres. The production provides an opportunity for our pupils to display their individual performing talents. We were delighted with the diversity of pupils reflected on-stage and their absolute commitment to the major production,” she said.

Shine is a contemporary musical set in Joburg. It presents the world of the Shine Performing Arts Academy, a college for talented and aspiring young performing artists where sweat and hard work are the key factors to a successful life as a performer.

The plot follows a diverse group of pupils from the acting, dancing and music faculties within the academy.

Over three years they learn to master their craft and grow up alongside each other, rising to the various challenges that face them. Shine is an adaptation of the well-known musical, Fame, and provided the audience with an acting, dance and musical performance that entertained from start to finish.

The cast consisted of Rand Park High School pupils from grades eight to 12. The school’s backstage, sound and lighting crew dealt with all technical requirements of the production, and the school band – directed, coached and trained by Fiona Hebrard – provided an outstanding musical performance for which the school has become renowned.

“The major production is an annual highlight of the performing arts programme and provides aspiring actors, dancers, musicians and singers with the opportunity for public performance,” said the school’s spokesperson Heather Robinson.

“We are extraordinarily proud of this year’s performance and congratulate the entire cast, crew, band and their directors, on a memorable performance,” she concluded.
