Methodist home celebrates Nurses’ Day

BORDEAUX – Miss South Africa pays the residents at Methodist Homes Garden Village a visit to celebrate International Nurses' Day with them.

Miss South Africa 2016 Ntandoyenkosi Kunene paid a visit to the Methodist Home Garden Village in Bordeaux where the nursing staff was celebrated on International Nurses’ Day.

International Nurses’ Day commemorates Florence Nightingale who is considered the founder of modern nursing. The residents at the home were treated to tea and cake as the nursing staff reiterated their Nightingale pledge. CEO of the Methodist Homes, Kelvin Glen, took Miss South Africa on a tour of their home to show her the high level care that residents are given at the home.

He explained that the nurses at the home worked tirelessly to ensure that the residents were well looked after and received quality care from the nurses.

“Today we are thanking the nurses for their dedication, it is not an easy job but they do it to the best of their abilities,” he said.

Clinical tutor for the home, Priscilla Nhlapo who has been a nurse since 1969, pointed out that she was just following in the footsteps of Nightingale as it was her efforts that moulded nursing. “Even today we are still following what Nightingale taught and that is to serve patients with passion and care and that is what we offer residents here,”she said.

Nhlapo who has an honours degree in nursing education and also has experience abroad commended her colleagues at the Garden Village home for the dedication and hard work they put into their jobs by looking after the patients.

“Today nursing is made easier through modern medicines, which was not the case when I started nursing. One thing nurses everywhere have to remember is that they are dealing with human beings and that is why nurses must be professional at all times,” she added.

Miss South Africa praised the home for their diligent efforts in looking after the residents as she did her walkabout the home.

“I can really see that the staff here are doing their best to look after the residents and it really is great that the nurses are celebrated and appreciated,”she said.
