City to upgrade bulk storm water pipe in Ferndale

FERNDALE – The process to upgrade the bulk storm water pipe in Ferndale have started with the detail designs study.

Kgalawu Consulting is pleading with residents of Ferndale to allow them access to properties during the study of the Bulk stormwater upgrade at Main Avenue and Bond Street.

Joburg Road Agency (JRA) has started the investigations of the area and Collen Monnye from Kgalawu consulting said the portion of the pipe was also running underneath the residents’ properties.

This requires the contractor to gain access at some properties while conducting the study.

JRA initially conducted hydraulic flood studies and the storm water master plan was done after it was established that the storm water in the area was under capacity.

This meant that the pipe could not hold the flooding pressure and an upgrade was recommended. Over-flooding often occurs at the corner of Bond Street and Main Avenue during the rainy season.

These engineers were appointed to do detail designs to upgrade the current storm water system and new culverts (tunnels) to be installed in order to increase the capacity and cap all excess running storm water. “We are assessing, surveying and doing geotechnical investigations on the current stormwater system,” he said.

Ward 104 Councillor Mike Wood welcomed the upgrade of the storm water pipe. “We had major flooding and damage in the area. We will work closely with all parties to ensure minimum disruptions to residents,” he said.

Senior Engineer for Roads and Stormwater Planning at JRA Lwazi Kelembe confirmed that Kgalawu Consulting Engineers were appointed by them to investigate and design a Bulk stormwater due to flooding that has happened in the past in Main and Bond streets.

“They will need access to some properties to check the existing pipe sizes so that they can do the proper upgrade,”said Kelembe.
