Five million allocated to Conrad Bridge

BLAIRGOWRIE – Joburg Roads Agency will communicate any temporary impact on traffic when construction begins.

The City of Joburg has allocated more than R5 million for the construction of Conrad Bridge in Blairgowrie.

Joburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers confirmed that the work was currently at planning phase. “A budget of R5 098 040 is available and detailed designs will be developed in the 2016/17 financial year, thereafter construction work will begin,” she said.

She further explained that JRA would communicate any temporary impact on traffic to the public to enable them to plan their journeys.

“The project is aimed at safety and ease of mobility for road users and residents. The project will include the widening of the bridge from one lane in each direction to accommodate traffic travelling in two lanes in each direction,” she said.

She concluded that erosion protection will also be undertaken.

Ward 102 Councillor David Potter explained the upgrade of the bridge was initiated in 2010 following a petition submitted by the residents to the City.

“In a recent update from the JRA, the detail design report was pending finalisation of the environmental impact assessment (EIA). At the time of the update, there was a delay with finalising the EIA, which is issued by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD),” he said.
