Criminals terrorise Cosmo homes

COSMO CITY – A group of suspects believed to be in their early twenties have targeted residents in Cosmo City.

The level of crime, especially house break-ins and robbery is escalating at an alarming rate in Cosmo City.

The scourge prompted the Honeydew Police and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) to embark on a crime awareness campaign in the area on 7 May in an effort to alert the residents about the trend.

The police and CPF held crime exhibitions at different shopping centres in the area including Cosmo City Shopping Centre and the Shoprite Centre.

“Pamphlets were handed out to the residents making them aware of the high crime rate in Cosmo City,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs.

She said the CPF also collected information from residents to place them on an email database for updates regarding meetings and crime trends in their area.

“After the crime exhibitions, the police, JMPD and security companies conducted a high-visibility motorcade with blue lights and sirens through the streets of Cosmo City,” she explained.

Residents were also requested to look into their security systems and ensure that proper locks were installed on the inside doors and security gates in order to secure the doors and gates properly.

“Please do not leave any doors or windows open or unlocked during the night when sleeping,” she advised residents.

A group of suspects have been targeting residents staying in back rooms. Suspects are forcing or kicking in doors to gain entry and mostly commit these crimes in the early hours of the morning.

“The suspects operate on foot and no vehicle has been seen. It is believed that the suspects are in their early twenties. The suspects are also only taking small items such as cellphones and or cash,” she said.

Residents were advised to save the police contact numbers and immediately inform them when they hear someone at their door or notice any suspicious people or vehicles.

“Please report any robbery immediately to the police and do not leave the reporting to the next day. Always know your street address, with the nearest corner and extension where you stay,” she concluded.

Honeydew Sector 4 police vehicle contact numbers are 071 675 7104 or 071 675 7109.
