Johanesburg Water reminded residents that Level-2 water restrictions are still in place and must be adhered to.
Level-2 water restrictions, according to section 44 (3) of the Water Services Bylaw, states that all consumers are compelled not to water and irrigate their gardens from 6am to 6pm every day, not to fill their swimming pools with municipal water and not to use hosepipes to wash their cars or paved areas.
Johannesburg Water external communications officer Eleanor Mavimbela urged residents to partner with the entity in reducing the amount of water used in Joburg, and to report any form of vandalism and theft of water infrastructure to 080 000 2587. She further encouraged residents to subscribe on the Johannesburg Water website SMS notification service for alerts on planned or unplanned service interruptions.
How to conserve water without necessarily changing your lifestyle:
Indoors
- Convert to dual flush toilets
- Adjust the water level of washing and dishwashing machines to suit the load
- Install water-saving shower heads and flow restrictors
- Take short showers or, if you want a long soak, take a shallow bath
- Repair leaking or dripping taps
- Turn the tap off when you are brushing your teeth
- Do not leave taps dripping
- Use bathwater or grey-water to water the garden
- Buy water-efficient devices such as small shower heads.
Outdoors
- Water your garden in the morning or late in the afternoon and avoid watering on windy days
- Keep your garden free of weeds, as they use water too
- When sprinkling, use a timer on the tap
- Install a drip system or micro-sprays in garden beds
- Soak your garden twice a week and water the roots not the leaves
- Use a trigger nozzle on your hose
- Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway and sidewalk
- Wash a car on the lawn using a bucket instead of the hose
- Cover your pool to avoid evaporation on hot days and throughout the winter season
- Plant indigenous plants that require less watering
- Use rainwater harvesting.
