Currie Cup curtain raiser

MALANSHOF – Rand Park plays against Krugersdorp in a Currie Cup curtain raiser.

The Rand Park High School and Krugersdorp High School 1st rugby teams played each other in a friendly match in front of a Currie Cup crowd.

The friendly match was played as part of the Rand Park versus Krugersdorp rugby derby day, and Rand Park came out the winners with a final score of 57–5. The game was played at the Morgan Group Diggers Rugby Football Club (DRFC) on 7 May in order to bring more of a local feel to the Currie Cup match between Xerox Golden Lions and the Toyota Cheetahs, which was played afterwards.

Krugersdorp coach, Neil Holmes said, “It has been great to be able to play in front of such a large crowd… it isn’t very often that the smaller local schools get included in such prestigious events and this event makes a welcomed change.”

For most of the match, Rand Park dominated the field and converted numerous tries. It was a tough game for Krugersdorp, who had a strong attacking side but were unable to close the gaps.

Rand Park High School rugby coach, Sean Johnson, commented, “It has been a great day for our players, we worked hard for the win and thanks goes to Krugersdorp for their sportsmanship.”

Holmes added, “It was a struggle for our boys and we didn’t play our best, although it was still a good game and a great opportunity playing before a Currie Cup match. It gives young boys something to aspire to.”
