Barefoot day for the needy

ROBIN HILLS – Pupils from The King's School Robin Hills went barefoot for a day while collecting shoes for the needy.

It was bare feet and toes at The King’s School Robin Hills as the pupils came to school barefoot in their bid to collect shoes and donations for the less privileged children at Kids Haven.

History teacher at the school Brittany Coetzee said that this was an annual event that the school holds and they collected between 300 and 400 pairs of shoes which they will hand over to Kids Haven, an orphanage they had identified as needy.

“The pupils are encouraged to donate their old shoes or money in order to help the disadvantaged children. We buy school shoes with the money we collect and we work with another school whose pupils are in need of school shoes,” she said.

She explained that they did this to teach their pupils to have compassion and empathy for the less fortunate.

“We want the pupils here to experience what it is like to not have shoes, and this makes a great impact on how they see children without shoes,” she added.

Head of marketing and service, Kafiswe Mulenga said that he had worked with matric pupils to make the day a success.

“We marketed the day at school to encourage other pupils to take part and this is a measure of teaching them good values. There really is no sense in throwing away a pair of shoes that someone else can wear,” he explained.

Neve Kleinhaus donated two pairs of shoes as well as some money as she had seen children without shoes.

“I am more than able to help out another child in need because we are more privileged and I would encourage other school children to collect shoes to give to the needy,” she said.
