Tau boasts about City Power’s smart meters

JOBURG – Parks Tau says the City Power’s smart meters increased meter billing accuracy.

More than half of City Power’s electricity meters are smart meters and have increased meter billing accuracy by 13 percent over the past three months.

This was announced by the City of Joburg Mayor Parks Tau when delivering his State of the City Address on 4 May at Turffontein Race Course.

Tau said that smart meters were assisting the City to ensure accurate metering and reduced estimation – which means lower costs and fewer frustrations for residents.

“The City has also lit the way nationally with innovations that minimise and eliminate the need for load shedding. Smart meters, ripple controls and additional power generation from the Kelvin power station allowed us to actively mitigate load-shedding last winter,” said Tau.

He acknowledged that the recent Pikitup strike created a major health risk to the residents of Joburg. “We must take this opportunity to thank the residents of Joburg for your patience as we navigated the recent unprotected strike by Pikitup employees,” he said.

The City has introduced an integrated intelligent operations centre which enables JMPD and Emergency Management Services teams to be deployed at the right place in order to save lives

“We are building confidence in a safe city, safe business districts and safe neighbourhoods. The intelligent operations centre links to the expanding CCTV platform currently operational in the City, enabling us to use the cameras intelligently to track suspicious behaviour and prevent crime from happening,” he said.

He indicated that smart technology and smart policing were already reducing crime levels in the City. Tau spoke mostly on the successes of his administration since he took the reign of the City in 2011.

He explained that the Corridors of Freedom programme was the next step to the vision of the new economic democracy.

“We are empowering all classes of citizens to change the way they move for the better. The backbone of our Corridors of Freedom and the enabler of access to our rising economic democracy is reliable, affordable and dignified public transport. ,” he said.
