Residents urged to join Wag

WINDSOR – Chairperson of Wag Louise Mynhardt is urging residents to join them as they continue to fight against crime, drugs and other social issues.

Chairperson of the Windsor Action Group (Wag), Louise Mynhardt, is keeping the movement alive in Windsor dealing with the many social ills that plague the neighbourhood.

Mynhardt who has lived in the area for over 20 years said that over the years Windsor has had an increase in crime, drug dealing, abuse, and homelessness. Mynhardt said that Wag is involved in creating community awareness, education and where possible assisting with providing remedial action, in conjunction with other stakeholders, local councillors, and NGOs.

“We have found that with the number of foreigners increasing in the area there comes issues such as overcrowding in the complexes where there are too many people sharing apartments, which results in the infrastructure in the area being weighed down,” she said.

Mynhardt explained that with too many people sharing an apartment the refuse collection, drain system and the building itself is affected.

She pointed out that the drug issue plaguing Windsor was not becoming better despite police efforts to curb the scourge of drugs.

“The police are really doing an outstanding job in dealing with drug dealers in the area, however the dealers usually do not live in Windsor and hire street kids to sell the drugs and when they are arrested the dealer will just hires another homeless person to sell the drugs,” Mynhardt noted.

She added that Wag was continuously discussing the social ills that Windsor was experiencing through educating and mobilizing the residents of the area.

“We also host clean-ups to try and keep the streets clean as they are always dirty and strewn with litter and this is despite Pikitup’s efforts to keep the area clean,” she added.

Mynhardt encouraged residents to join Wag as it was a community initiative aimed at improving the quality of Windsor residents lives.

“Anyone who lives around Windsor is welcome to join us as we want to improve our numbers but we cannot do it alone, we need the community to join us in our endeavour to make Windsor a better neigbourhood,” she noted.
