The Pikkewyne team from Unika Voortrekkers held a concert where they hosted over 300 showgoers. The concert was held at the Laerskool Unika sports grounds where the all-girl group booked Kaleidoskoop to draw in a large crowd on 22 April.
Sonia Williams, coordinating leader of Pikkewyne, explained that they held the concert to raise funds for the Voortrekkers which would enable several children to afford the joining and the registration fees of the organisation and give them a chance to be part of the group.
“Last year we sold vetkoek as a fundraising venture but this year we wanted to do something bigger, and different,” she explained.
Williams said that they manged to sell all 300 tickets as each child was assigned several tickets to sell to their friends and family.
She pointed out that the Pikkewyn group goes on camps and learns life skills, leadership skills and how to take care of nature. Williams added that anyone who wanted their child to join their organisation should contact them as all children are welcome.
Jouba Jordaan, lead singer of Kaleidoskoop, said that they loved what they did because it allowed them to give back to the community while making a living.
“We are an acoustic folk band and currently we are working on our new album titled Road Trip, and it’s really cool that we are spending time with the kids today. We were really excited when we got the call to perform here,” Jordaan said.
