GALLERY: Birdies for cancer patients

RANDPARK – 164 golfers participate in a four-ball, 18-hole golf day in aid of cancer patients.

Look Good Feel Better is a global programme that was launched in South Africa in 2005. The programme was formed to help women address the visible side-effects of cancer treatment.

The major annual golf day to raise funds for the programme took place on 19 April for the 12th time at Randpark Golf Club. According to programme director Margaret Hewson, 164 golfers took part in an 18-hole, four-ball alliance.

Hewson explained that the programme focuses on the visible effects of cancer treatment including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It can be anything like pigmentation, acne, discolouration of nails, oily or dry skin and dark rings under the eyes. “Women going through treatment feel out of control and fearful, therefore they often isolate themselves. We want to give them back their self-esteem,” said Hewson.

The programme offers free, interactive workshops in 40 private and public hospitals in seven of the major cities in South Africa. Hewson added that men can also attend the workshops as they also deal with side effects too. To be able to run the programme, Look Good Feel Better needs funds.

Derick Muller practised his putting and said that this was the first year that he participated in the golf day. Mark Pretorius said that he participates every year. “It is for a good cause and this is such a great golf day,” said Pretorius.

Hewson said that the golf day was a huge success and she already has player bookings for next year.

The winners were:

  • Men’s four ball

Darryl Britnow, Rhane Diab, Dan Sevel and Brett Donaldson

  • Women’s four ball

Irene Farr, Angie Adams, Joanne McGowan and Jackie Adami

  • Mixed four ball

Durand Weldek, Hans Bruwer, Rene Delport and Melanie Hart.
