UPDATE: Two taxi leaders shot after taxi association meeting

RANDBURG CBD – Police are investigating an incident of murder and attempted murder after two taxi leaders were shot.

One of two taxi leaders shot by unknown men outside the Randburg Taxi Rank, died on the scene.

According to Gauteng Police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela, the men were shot after attending a taxi association meeting.

“It was around 1pm when members of the taxi association walked out of the meeting. They [the suspects] were driving and the two jumped out of the car and approached the taxi leaders. So far we don’t know how many were in the car,” he said.

The suspects opened fire on the two men. One of the men was transported to a nearby hospital. Police believe he was also shot in the upper body.

The other man succumbed to his wounds on the scene.

“The motive of the murder is still unknown to us. The case of murder and attempted murder has been opened and that is what we are investigating,” Lt Makhubela said.

He further explained that although the motive was not yet clear, he could not rule out whether the incident was related to taxi violence.

According to ER24, paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after 1pm. On arrival, paramedics found a man lying near some shops close to the taxi rank.

“Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his multiple gunshot wounds. Nothing more could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on the scene,” said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.

He further explained that it was believed that an unknown number of gunmen opened fire while the man was in his vehicle.

“He attempted to run towards the shops but fell due to his wounds,” concluded Meiring.
