ROBINDALE – British school ends off their SA tour with their final games at Laerskool Unika.

It was a classic clash between South Africa and England on 12 April, when Laerskool Unika in Robindale played host to an afternoon of rugby between the school’s first and second teams against British school, Lochniver House School.

The afternoon of rugby started with singing of both countries’ national anthems. The boys looked ready and proud to not only represent their

respective schools, but their countries as well.

Lochniver House School’s second team dominated the match with a winning score of 28–14. The first team of Laerskool Unika however, showed what they are made of with a winning score of 54–21. Player, Frans Pretorius scored four tries, Marnus Kotzé scored one try and Luke Spence scored the team’s sixth try. Spence also gathered six points for the team with his very capable kicking boot.

Principal of Laerskool Unika, Sieg Schaefer, explained that the school from England visits Laerskool Unika every fourth year. “They tour through South Africa. This is their last game in South Africa. On [13 April] they end their tour at Gold Reef City, before flying back to England,” said Schaefer.

He added that they use these matches as a preparation for the upcoming rugby season. “I hoped that our teams will win, but also do so in good sportsmanship,” said Schaefer. He jokingly added that the matches were like the Anglo Boer War as it was England against South Africa.

What made the day even more special was that the U16 rugby team of Hoërskool Randburg came to support Laerskool Unika. Anel Engelbrecht from the school said that many pupils from Laerskool Unika go to Hoërskool Randburg after they finish primary school.

The day made for an exciting day of rugby, proving that a sport really does have the potential to make friends out of “enemies”.
