Dangerous hole unfilled for more than a year

RANDBURG CBD – The hole that was dug up last year February is still not filled, although the burst water pipe was urgently repaired.

It has been about a year since the hole dug up by Joburg Water(JW) on Pretoria Avenue near the Hill Street Pedestrian Mall in Randburg CBD, was left open.

JW allegedly dug up the hole while repairing a burst pipe earlier last year. To date, the hole has not been filled.

The pavement along the shopping centre on the same street was flooded by water when the pipe burst. It is no longer on the same level and nothing has been done to reinstate it to its standard.

Ward 102 Councillor David Potter said JW had dragged its heels for more than a year to get the problem resolved. “Initially, this problem was reported to my office around February last year. Numerous escalations including high-level escalations have taken place yielding no results,” he said.

He explained that it was also reported at the regional service delivery joint operations committee meeting in 2015 with numerous deadlines given to the entity under the leadership of the Region B, regional director and management team.

“JW Randburg Depot is well aware of the need to reinstate the paving and have even liaised with me about it. The current state of the wobbly paving and the massive hole pose extreme danger to pedestrians in the CBD,” he mentioned.

Potter concluded that the area was a pedestrian CBD with many users on foot and bicycle.

“It is a disgrace that JW has not attended to this as yet and I expect some action with urgency,” he concluded.

JW external communications officer Eleanor Mavimbela said the problem was on the entity’s priority list. “We will be getting a contractor to close the hole soon,” she said.
