UPDATE: Residents clean Republic Road

BORDEAUX – Residents from four suburbs in Ward 102 clean litter along the Republic Road from Corner William Nicol Drive to Main Street in Bordeaux.

More than 70 residents from four suburbs in Ward 102 donned their gloves, cleaned and swept up grass along Republic Road on 9 April.

Residents from Willowild, Hurlingham, Bordeaux South and North split into groups and worked on the stretch from William Nicol Drive to Main Street along Republic Road.

They removed weeds, picked up dirt and removed grass cuttings. More than 100 bags of litter were collected.

Bordeaux South Resident’s Association (BSRA) chairperson, Elinor Bodinger, thanked the residents from these four suburbs.

“Volunteers worked for two hours from 10am and achieved a major clean up of the area– as the power of the community brought together just over 75 people,” she said.

She explained that Ghost Security patrolled the road and ensured that residents were safe while cleaning.

One of the residents, Albert Kolesky from Hurlingham explained that it was a collective effort from the four suburbs. “It seems like our suburbs have been abandoned by authorities and we felt we should keep them clean on our own,” he said.

Residents initially complained that Joburg City Parks and Zoo failed to clear the rubbish after cutting the grass along the road.

Ward 102 Councillor David Potter thanked Elinor Bodinger for arranging the clean-up. He said City Parks failed to clean the area when they mowed the lawn

“With no to little supervision, contractors contracted to Joburg City Parks and Zoo cut parks and pavements, but fail to rake up the grass or pick up litter before or after cutting,” he explained.

He further indicated that management failed to supervise on site but resorted to relying on photos, which were often on the angle of the contractor’s discretion.

“Joburg City Parks needs to spend less money on employing more senior management and focus their budgets on replacing staff members who have retired, resigned and left the employ of the entity,” he concluded.

Joburg City Parks and Zoo spokesperson Jenny Moodley said the cutting and clearing of Republic Road commenced last week.

The work schedule included the first team cutting with brush cutters and the second team removing uncut weeds and cleaning the site.

She further acknowledged the residents and thanked them for the deep cleaning of this stretch.
