Pikitup appeals to community to follow normal refuse collection procedures

JOHANNESBURG – Request cleaning tools, gloves and bags from the City of Joburg to help clean up your community.

Pikitup has appealed to the Joburg residents, business owners, hawkers, schools, motorists, commuters and pedestrians to bag their excess waste, in order to avoid health risks.

If the excess waste is bagged it will make it easier for the contingency teams on the ground to speed up the time spent collecting from bins, street corners and in open spaces.

As Pikitup continues to intensify their contingency plans, they urge residents to take out their bins during their normal refuse collection day. If they cannot make it on that day, they will endeavour to collect within 48 hours. Should the 48-hour period lapse and your bin has still not been emptied, please return it back to your property and wait for your next scheduled collection day.

Pikitup spokesperson Jacky Mashapu said, “The City is encouraged by the response from the public, who are actively participating in the restoration of the city by cleaning up, continuing to recycle and supporting the contingency teams on the street. The city is committed to getting the recycling and residual waste collected as soon as possible.”

Pikitup also extends its gratitude to members of various neighborhood watches and community policing forums who have been assisting in facilitating the delivery of waste collection in the City. The intervention has helped to ensure that the clearing of illegal dumping and refuse collection is conducted in a safe environment.

Pikitup continues to urge communities across the City of Joburg to call the 24-hour hotline on 011 286 6009 to request cleaning tools, gloves, and bags for community-led cleanups and removal of bagged waste by Pikitup. Illegal dumping can also be logged on the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) Find and Fix App which can be downloaded on cellphones for free from the Google Play Store.
