Massive clean-up at Republic Road

BORDEAUX – Residents are expected to attend the clean-up initiative on 9 April along Republic Road.

Residents in various suburbs from Ward 102 are encouraged to attend the clean-up initiative on 9 April.

This initiative was started in order to clean the middle and side islands of Republic Road from Jan Smuts Avenue to William Nicol Drive in an effort to reduce litter in the area.

Bordeaux South Resident’s Association (BSRA) chairperson, Elinor Bodinger said they will start cleaning from 10am.

“We are calling on all volunteers to come and be part of our amazing community. Bring your children, brooms, and rubbish bags,” she said.

She explained that residents would meet in two groups, sweep the sides the road and pick up all the litter.

Ward 102 Councillor David Potter explained that a lot of the rubbish along the road was caused by City Parks and Zoo when cutting grass. He said they had started cutting the grass without first clearing the rubbish along the road and that it had not been collected due to the Pikitup strike.

“The service from the City of Joburg is not adequate,” he explained.

He further complained that more work needed to be done by Joburg Roads Agency to clear up the weeds growing along the road. “Pikitup has agreed to give us some of the material which includes masks, refuse bags and gloves,” he added.

Joburg City Parks and Zoo spokesperson Jenny Moodley said they were doing general clean-ups and the contractor was already paid. “The contractor is back on site cleaning and there is no litter,” she said.

She further explained that they were cutting the grass until Wiliam Nicol Drive. “A team of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers were also clearing the grass and collecting litter,” she concluded.
