Fun and games in Nelspruit

ROBINDALE – First rugby team of Laerskool Unika win two out of three games in holiday rugby tour.

22 Pupils and three teachers from Laerskool Unika in Robindale spent a part of their holidays in Nelspruit on a six-day rugby tour. The pupils departed on 16 March. The tour consisted of 22 first-team rugby players and their two coaches, Christiaan Norman and Anton van Nieuwenhuizen. Teacher, Ruan Benadie also accompanied the tour group.

The team played three games. On 16 March they played against Laerskool Nelspruit in an evening game. Laerskool Unika unfortunately lost in the last minute with a score of 22–20. The team stayed in a lodge just outside Nelspruit. The second game was against Laerskool Sabie. Laerskool Unika won with a score of 24–12. After which the team had a chance to go for a refreshing swim.

The final match was on 18 March against Laerskool Laeveld. Laerskool Unika won the match with a massive 60–0. The team then visited the Kruger National Park. With all the matches completed, the boys were officially on holiday. The team also visited the Sudwala Caves and went Gecko River Rafting, before returning home on 21 March.

The team had several fundraising activities to assist with the cost of the tour and was fortunate to secure some sponsorship. Placecol was their main sponsor and provided each player and coach with an entire rugby-kit.

The rugby team also participated in the Easter KES Rugby and Hockey festival on 24, 26 and 28 March. Laerskool Unika played six games against Wynberg Boys Junior School, Laerskool Florida, Linksfield Primary School, Pirates Rugby Club U13, Diggers Rugby Club U13 and Hurlyvale Primary School. The team won three and lost three games.
