Hefty penalty after car licence expires

MALANSHOF – Is your car's licence about to expire? Residents are urged to find out when their licence will expire to avoid paying penalties.

Every year the traffic department usually sends reminder letters to drivers and car owners to renew their car licence, however Rodney Kraayenburg reports otherwise.

Kraayenburg (62) said that he has been renewing his car licence for the past forty years after receiving his reminder letter, but this year he had to pay a fine after renewing his licence late.

” I was checking my windscreen after it was repaired and that is when I saw that my licence had expired, which prompted me to go to the licencing department where I inquired about the reminder letter,” Kraayenburg said.

He added that he ended up paying an additional R300 for the two cars he owns. “I have not heard anything from the media about the whether the transport department has stopped reminder letters or if there are any problems with them,” he pointed out.

Spokesperson from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said that it was the responsibility of the residents to check when their car licence was due for renewal in terms of the act. “All car owners have a 21-day grace period to renew their licence before they are fined on a monthly basis,” Supt Minnaar added.

He added that residents had the option of paying for their licence at a post office or at the licencing department.

Spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Transport Ishmael Mnisi said that the reminder letters were not delivered as per usual, due to the fact that the post office workers embarked on a strike that resulted in their letters not being delivered.

“Residents are encouraged to look at the dates on which their licences are expiring in order to avoid paying penalties. The letters will be sent out as per normal in the future,” Mnisi said.
