Community cleans up the Jukskei River

OLIVEDALE – The Klein Jukskei Green Belt Initiative (KJGBI) removed alien invasive plants and trees, collected rubbish and filled the skips in their monthly efforts to keep the river clean.

The Klein Jukskei Green Belt Initiative (KJGBI) team together with community members cleaned up the Klein Jukskei River on 2 April.

Cameron McGregor from KJGBI said that the aim of the day was to ensure that the river was safe, clean and accessible for all.

“The clean-up was sponsored by Balwin Properties as well as some of their subcontractors including, Micah Kitchens, and Whitfields Managing Agents,” McGregor said.

He added that the Douglasdale SAPS and the CPF had also participated in the clean-up and thanked the Olivedale Spar for donating water as well as the Sasol Garage on Jacaranda Road, for the fuel sponsorship that was used for the grass cutters.

McGregor also added that the CEO of Balwin Properties, Stephen Brooks handed over two new chainsaws and two brush cutters to the KJGBI. “The clean-up focused on the area just south of the Jacaranda Road bridge where teams removed a number of alien invasive plants and trees, collected rubbish and filled the skips. The felled trees and shrubs were chipped by the City Parks’ chipper,” he said.

McGregor pointed out that the vision the KJGBI was to make the section of river from Witkoppen Road to Malibongwe Drive safe, clean and accessible for the entire community to enjoy.

“We appeal to the community, resident’s associations, body corporate’s and companies in and around Jukskei Park, Oilvedale, Douglasdale, Meadowhurst and Bryanston to join in our monthly clean-ups, which happen on the first Saturday of every month,” he said.

He pointed out that the initiative was also registered with Community Hours SA which meant that anyone, from high school pupils to any other community member needing volunteer hours, could come pick up some rubbish and claim hours. “If you or your company would like to be part of the ongoing sustainable solution by sponsoring a clean-up or putting CSI funding into the KJGBI Section 21 company on an ongoing basis, please feel free to contact us,” McGregor noted.
