Linden Library gets imaginative

LINDEN – Linden Library celebrates the joys of having a bold imagination with its weekly book readings.

Keeping the little ones interested in reading and learning has proven to be an easy task for the librarians of Linden Library. The library hosts book-reading day every Wednesday, which is centered around creativity and education.

Senior librarian, Althea Theunissen said that she has been a librarian for the past 37 years and has thoroughly enjoyed her time as a librarian through the years. “For as long as I can remember, book-reading day has always been a part of Linden Library and has constantly been a fan favourite,” said Theunissen. During this particular session the children were also introduced to what the library called continual learning.

This learning is centered around children being educated about computers. “The oldest children that come to book reading are between seven and eight years old, so being able to awaken an child’s imagination at such a tender age and educating them too is something great to be a part of,” said Theunissen. She divulged that nothing excites children or sparks a greater interest than Dr. Seuss books. “You should see the pure excitement and interest in these books that the children have, they just love all the characters and it’s as though you can see their imagination just become more vivid,” said Theunissen.

Mavourneen Mateer, fellow librarian said on book reading days she looks forward to seeing the children’s faces as they are read a book. “I love the idea that I can be able to put something positive into their lives,” said Mateer.

Theunissen concluded that most of the children are usually accompanied by their grandparents and further said that it is a learning experience for both of them. “Grandparents get to connect with their grandchildren and it is lovely to see them bond over books and new concepts.”
