The physical skills of a child can have a direct influence on the confidence of a child and how they look at themselves.

The lifestyles of families in this era has a direct influence on the lagging skills of children. Some of the reasons may be:

  • The electronic era

Children tend to spend a lot of time in front of screens

  • Bad eating habits

The fast-paced life forces children to eat more take-away meals

  • The safety in our country

Parents don’t feel comfortable to let children ride their bicycles alone.

Van der Merwe explained that he has noticed that girls of 14 years is on average are 11kg heavier than 30 years ago. There is also a high absenteeism rate in school-going children.

Van der Merwe advised parents the following:

  • Early physical stimulation

Not every child will be a champion, but it is important to participate in physical activities to boost for self confidence

  • Don’t push children

It puts pressure on children, especially in a competitive environment

  • Develop skills

Provide the necessary basic preparation in order for skills to develop
