Charity shop for hospice

CRESTA – New Hospice Wits charity shop provide community members with a chance to give back to patients in need.

Anyone with unwanted items from clothes, crockery and furniture can now donate them to the new Hospice Wits charity shop at Hillcrest Centre in Cresta. Hospice Wits is a charity that forms part of the greater Hospice South Africa.

Operations manager for Hospice Wits, Michelle von Allemann explained that Hospice Wits provides funding for people with life-threatening diseases. “We have an In-Patient Unit (IPU) in Houghton as well as Soweto.” She further said that they also provide in-patient home-care, where they provide nurses to assist people at their homes.

“If patients need to stay in the IPU we can provide childcare as well and daycare for their children,” said Von Alleman. Medical equipment is also provided by Wits Hospice. The new shop opened two weeks ago as much of the fundraising for Hospice Wits takes place in the Cresta area. “As a branch, we also have shops in Orange Grove, Kensington and Parkmore,” said Von Allemann.

She calls on the community to donate any unwanted items that are still in a good condition as the funds raised will be used to provide free medical care to patients in need. “For example cancer touches so many lives. Hospice does not only provide care for the patients, but to their entire family.” Von Allemann said that her father passed away after struggling with cancer. “Even after his death Hospice provided counselling for my mother,” said Von Allemann.

She added that Hospice does not only focus on the medical aspect of disease, but on a spiritual and holistic approach as well.

Von Alleman asked that any member of the community can support the charity shop by donating, buying items or volunteering their time at the shop. “If someone wants to donate items, we will collect them,” concluded Von Alleman.
