1213 spots make George hard to miss

JOBURG – George the Rhino will travel to Vietnam to raise awareness against rhino poaching.

Anton Fouche might not be a name you know all that well, but today marks another adventure for this wildlife activist. On 22 March Fouche started his 32 day scaffold tower endurance stunt as a way to raise funds for his George2Vietnam initiative.

He will spend the next month up a scaffold tower overlooking the Bird Gardens in Montecasino.

Fouche plans to raise at least R1 million within the 32 days while being carefully guarded by George himself – George being a life-sized fibre-glass replica of a white rhino, which is set on a wheeled trolley. On his body there are 1213 red spots which signify the number of rhinos poached in 2014. George has already travelled across the country over the past two years educating and changing people’s thinking towards the importance of rhinos and wildlife.

Fouche, sadly stated that incidents of rhino poaching have not declined. “I want to go around educating people about the cruelty of poaching and the devastating effects it has to wildlife,” said Fouche. He went on to divulge why it is he plans on going to Vietnam. He explained that he and George have planned this journey as this is where he believes the need for poaching is heightened. “I want to go to Korea and educate the youth there so that they know there are no benefits to poaching,” said Fouche.

After his 32 days Fouche and George will spend two months travelling around South Africa. They will go to schools and public spaces across the nine provinces compelling fellow countrymen to join in on the initiative to send George to Vietnam.

Ever the optimist, Fouche concluded that he has always seen the glass half full. “I hope that years from now we speak of our success when it comes to curbing the the scourge of rhino poaching and realise that anything is possible when we work together for change.”
