Athletes win eight medals

FONTAINEBLEAU – Five athletes make their school very proud and beat the odds at SA Athletics Championships.

Five athletes from Laerskool Fontainebleau took part in the South African Primary School Athletics Championships in Port Elizabeth on 11 and 12 March.

Three out the athletes won eight medals between them. Simoné de Wet won gold in the 200m hurdles, gold in the 75m hurdles and bronze in the 200m track event. Kayla la Grange won gold in high jump, gold in the 150m track event and silver in the 100m event. La Grange also won a gold medal for her part in the four times 100m relay team.

Zonica Lindeque won a silver medal in shot put and came in 8th place in discus. Unfortunately, Mignon la Grange just missed out and came in fourth in shot put. Elaine Wijnbeek came in fifth in hurdles.

The school’s athletics organiser, Appel van der Westhuizen said that he is very proud of the athletes. “If you look at the statistics, Laerskool Fontainebleau, which is not a big school, got more medals than three provinces,” explained Van der Westhuizen. Limpopo had a total of five medals, KwaZulu-Natal won two medals and the Northern Cape won one medal.
