Abandoned baby found in refuse bag in Darrenwood

DARRENWOOD – Abandoned baby's umbilical cord was tied up with a shoe lace.

A family found a three-day-old baby girl in a refuse bag in their driveway in the cold and rainy weather. The baby’s umbilical cord was tied up with a shoe lace.

They immediately reported it to the police.

Linden Police Warrant Officer Jaco Pieterse quickly reported to the scene on 17 March. The unidentified baby girl was taken to the Lighthouse Baby Shelter where she was bathed, fed and clothed.

“A child abandonment case has been opened by the Linden Police. We are looking for any information that can lead to finding the mother of the baby,” said Linden Police Captain Alex Vermaak.

The baby will stay at the Lighthouse Baby Shelter, while the social workers work on the case and the police continue with investigations.

Captain Vermaak said that this is the second case involving an abandoned baby in the last six months.
