UPDATE: Surrey Avenue to be completed by mid-April

FERNDALE – Surrey Avenue storm-water project is expected to be completed by mid-April.

The problem at Surrey Avenue in Ferndale has escalated to Bond Street, despite the contractor’s assurances that the road would be ready by February this year.

The project delay has exacerbated the situation as storm-water pipes, which are not yet closed are relaying storm water onto the road’s surface.

The Joburg Roads Agency’s project to fix storm-water drainage and repair the sidewalks is now expected to be completed by mid-April.

The project had begun towards the end of last year after many months of complaints by Dirk Botha from Krisp Properties Commercial.

This after the portion of the road close to Nu-Hold Group’s office started to erode since February 2014.

Botha was worried about the delays of the project as the floods washed sand to the bottom of the road.

Now water has accumulated at the manhole in the corner of Bond Street and Surrey Avenue. The road is now damaged with water running underneath the tar, which has resulted in potholes on Bond Street.

The tar is no longer on the same level before the project was started. “They have now caused unnecessary damage. What will happen here now,” he asked.

He said the project was expected to be completed before the rainy season started.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers apologised for the delays. She said the JRA depot went on site and worked on Bond Street.

“We are committed to ensuring the road is temporarily safe and driveable for vehicles. We will continue to maintain the road condition until the storm-water project is finalised and the road’s surface condition can be permanently addressed,” she explained.
