UPDATE: JRA repairs storm water pipe

MALANSHOF – JRA is finally fixing the storm-water pipe in Malanshof.

Joburg Roads Agency has finally heeded the call from residents and started to repair the storm water pipe in Malanshof.

Residents and the councillor for the area complained to the City for more than 18 months about the problem.

A three metre-deep hole developed on the property at the Spar Shopping Centre on the corner of Philip Le Roux Drive and Hans Schoeman Street.

The storm-water infrastructure experienced a series of depressions along the route due to leakage in its system and the design of manholes.

Ward 104 Councillor Mike Wood said the hole formed as a result of a very old pipe, however JRA had eventually allocated funds to solve the problem.

“At least something has now been done after such a long period. I think a lack of communication between the depot and head office caused the delays,” Councillor Wood said.

He further indicated that JRA initially conducted an audit and will endeavour to restore the state of the garden at the property when the project is completed.

To date, JRA has started the project, which is expected to be finished by the end of April.

Remedial works include excavation and preparation of storm water deviation measures, geotechnical investigation and reinstatement of a storm water junction box and reinforcement of concrete.

JRA spokesperson, Bertha Peters-Scheepers, explained that the project was scheduled to be completed in a three month period. “The contractor indicated that he will complete the work earlier due to the nature and location of the project,” she said.

The project community liaison officer (CLO) Paul Sambo said they notified residents about the project. “We needed to make residents aware of the activities that will be going on here,” he said.
