Coach a friend, make a friend

RANDPARK RIDGE – The game of chess forges a network between Trinityhouse and Kingsway schools.

Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge Preparatory School chess pupils have started their own initiative called ‘Coach a Friend’, where the enthusiastic players teach pupils of the neighbouring school, Kingsway Christian School, how to play chess.

Trinityhouse Preparatory recently hosted the pupils from Kingsway and taught pupils the basic rules and moves of the game of chess. The day ended with a picnic, where friendships were forged. The event marked the start of a support network to develop players, who have a love for the game, and left the pupils eager for the next time they would have the opportunity to coach a friend.

“Both schools benefit as it gives the pupils an opportunity to make friends and promote the sport. This first event went wonderfully,” said Liza le Roux, head of the chess department for Trinityhouse Preparatory school.

Since the day was so successful, Trinityhouse has decided to make the chess games a regular part of the chess calendar, with at least one game per term.
