I am a public servant – Mashaba

RANDPARK – Mashaba indicates that he is a public servant and it is time to pay back to the people of South Africa.

Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate for City of Joburg, Herman Mashaba, insisted that all the service delivery problems are the results of the current government that hires people who are not capable of delivering.

Mashaba was speaking at the party’s breakfast with Western Cape Premier Helen Zille on 26 February at the Fairway Hotel in Randpark.

He said the DA would not run the public service on the basis of friends and that he believes that the people of Joburg deserve better living conditions.

“We will make sure that we will deploy the right people. When we take over the city we will have a skills audit ensuring that we put people in appropriate jobs,” he explained.

Mashaba encouraged his colleagues to encourage their neighbours and friends to register for elections. He explained that he is a public servant and that it is his time to pay back to the country.

He further explained that his desire to join politics was more influenced by President Jacob Zuma’s decision of firing the then Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene and replaced him with the little known David van Rooyen.

“I could not just stand and watch as the bus driven by our president on the brink of collapse,” he continued.

Helen Zille indicated that credit agency ratings were holding Zuma accountable. She based most of her speech on newspapers headlines of 26 February.

“Our president immediately took over National Prosecuting Authority when he got into power. We cannot sit back and look at the president using all the democratic institutions for his gains,” she said.

She further explained that accountability, rule of law and a capable state were the fundamental principles of democracy. “It is about time people get involved and participate in our government rather than just reading newspapers headlines and getting depressed,” she concluded.
