Calling all tree fellers

DELTA PARK – DEC is appealing to tree fellers to cut down a tree which could cause serious damage to buildings.

Delta Environmental Centre appealed to the members of the public, especially a reputable tree feller, to offer their services, free-of-charge, to fell an ana (acacia albida) tree.

The tree feller would only be responsible to cut the tree as it would not be necessary to remove the timber since many residents were always keen and able to take that away.

This beautiful and bird-friendly tree has grown well but is now leaning over the roof on the corner of the DEC building near the tea garden.

The ana tree leans over and there is a fear that it could fall onto the building.

The outgoing executive officer, Di Beeton, explained that if the tree is blown over or uprooted, it would cause untold damage to the building.

“As the Delta building forms a critical part of the Art Deco buildings which is a heritage site, it would be a disaster if a portion of the building is destroyed,” she explained.

Geoff Lockwood from DEC said the tree was planted about three decades ago when the centre was being developed from the old sewage works as an educational centre.

“Back then, we focused on planting indigenous trees and did not anticipate what could happen now,” he explained.

According to Lockwood, the roots were growing out of the ground and the tree was collapsing onto the building.

“The cost of cutting and removing it (tree) will be very high. We need someone who would like to help us – we desperately need it removed before it causes serious damage,” he concluded.
